New Patients

Your first session typically includes a thorough evaluation and review of your psychological, familial, medical, work and academic history. We will also focus on the problem or problems that you would like help with now. At session’s end, I will typically propose a treatment plan and we will discuss your view of the treatment plan and possible modifications.

I provide short term psychotherapy for the problems that I treat. Short term therapy may range from 6 sessions to approximately one year. It is impossible to predict the exact length of therapy, but the problems that I treat can improve significantly with brief therapy. Anxiety, insomnia, and other sleep problems respond particularly well to short term treatment. In the case of psychological treatment for chronic pain or chronic illness, the focus is on helping you develop new, effective coping techniques and skills (such as heart rate variability or HRV biofeedback), changing unhelpful attitudes and developing a new way of relating to your pain or illness. The aim is for treatment to result in a fuller, more engaged and meaningful life. Put another way, the goal is for you to learn to live beyond your pain or illness.
